Our Staff

Senior Pastor - Jason Elsmore

Jason and his family came to Gateway in July 2004 after being involved in local church ministry and high school chaplaincy in Sydney for 9 years. His intial role at Gateway was as the Evening Service Pastor, providing leadership and teaching for our 6pm congregation and Young Adults ministries and in July 2008 he became Senior Pastor. Jason is passionate about sharing the life-changing message of Jesus and is determined to do whatever he can to see the Church be real and relevant in our community and throughout the world. He is married to Susan and they have 4 school aged children. He loves rugby, water sports, 4WDing, camping and playing in the backyard with his kids.

Executive Pastor – Paul Cavanagh

Paul and his family have been a part of Gateway since 1991 and he has been on staff since 2002, having escaped the corporate world where he held a number of senior executive roles with leading Australian companies. Paul is married to Anita and they have 3 grown children. Apart from his family, his passions include worship and seeing men's lives turned around. These are expressed in his leadership of the Gateway Men’s Network, and involvement as a worship leader. As Executive Pastor he believes he has the best job in the world, utilising all his business experience and qualifications along with over 30 years as a believer to radically enable the Church to fulfill the mission it is called to. In his spare time Paul loves playing his Maton guitar and getting glued to sport on the box.

 

Pastor Small Groups & Prayer – Helen Bates

Helen has more than 25 years of experience in mission and pastoral ministry across different denominations. She has served with the Gateway Team since January 2004, facilitating Life Groups and Training at Gateway. She is married to David, and her passion is for people to grow and change as they come to know God and do their journey with Him.

 

Young Adults & Young Families Pastor - Andrew Mayne

Andrew began at Gateway as a youth intern in 2000, and served as youth pastor until the end of 2007. After a year overseeing and developing our refugee focussed ministry at Carewerx in 2008 he is now overseeing our Young Adults, Young Marrieds and Young Family ministies. Andrew is married to Chrissy and they have 3 boys. Andrew's passion is working within the local church, facilitating opportunities for people to show Gods love and grace to others. His other interests include playing and watching live music, golf, fishing and generally hanging out around the BBQ with friends and family.

 Christine Wood

Creative Ministries Coordinator - Christine Wood 

Christine came to Gateway with her family in April 2008.  She began working with the creative ministries team in July 2009, and in Feb 2010 was appointed the Creative Ministries Coordinator. Christine has years of experience leading teams and planning church services and events. Her heart is to make the most of every opportunity we have to impact the people who come to our church with the life-changing message of Jesus. She is married to Murray who is involved in men’s mentoring and music ministries, and they have 3 school-aged children. Christine also enjoys craft (especially patchwork and embroidery), reading, and family holidays.

 

Missions Pastor - Ashley Withers

Ashley has been a member of Gateway since 1980 and joined the Gateway staff as Missions Pastor in 2003. Ashley and his wife Paula were missionaries with Operation Mobilization and Servants to Asia’s Urban Poor. He has trained in pastoral ministry and missions, and is also a psychologist. Ashley is committed to helping missionaries cope with the challenges of full-time ministry and cross-cultural issues, and to providing counseling for couples and individuals so that they can experience the fullness of life that God wants for them. His interests include playing tennis, surfing, staying fit, and having fun with his family.

 

Community & Care Pastor - Sue Sharp

Sue has been part of the Gateway Church family for over 20 years and has served as an Elder and leader involved in training in the areas of Pastoral Care, Counseling and Recovery Ministry. Sue’s professional background is in Social Work, Counseling, Human Services and Administration. In her role as Community & Care Pastor, Sue is passionate and enthusiastic about reaching out and impacting local communities in a holistic way for Jesus. Sue is married to John and they have 5 adult married children and 11 grandchildren. She loves family `get togethers`, reading, 60’s music, travel and mission to other cultures.

 

Youth Pastor - Tim Lucas 

Tim has been involved at Gateway since 1999, serving in the youth ministry since 2001 as a leader and in 2007 as a youth intern. Previously he has worked as a Scripture Union chaplain in a state school for 3 years. He has studied business and currently is enrolled in a theology degree. Tim began as Youth Pastor at the beginning of 2008.  His passion is to reach out to young people in a relevant way and to encourage them to take steps in their journey of faith. Tim's interest include snowboarding, kayaking, reading and hanging out with friends.

 

Youth Pastor - Lauren Lucas

Lauren has been part of the Gateway family since 1988 and involved in the youth ministry since 2005. In 2009 she became Youth Pastor alongside Tim after having been a youth leader and youth intern. Lauren also had experience running programs, camps and events for children and youth, as well as presenting seminars in High Schools. Lauren has a passion to see young people know they are loved and to connect them with a God who loves then. In her spare time she enjoys hanging out at the beach, playing sport and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Children's Pastor - Catherine Hopkins

Catherine has been part of Gateway for 17 years and on the childrens' ministry team for over ten years. Throughout her time working on the team she has lead every age group from 0 to 12 years old. She has a passion to see children nurtured into a relationship with Jesus and to see people realise their potential through God's love and grace and pass it on to others. Her other interests include cycling, travel and reading. 

 

Carewerx Coordinator - Paula Withers

Paula has been part of Gateway since 1983. The following year she and her new husband (Ashley - our missions pastor) were commissioned as missionaries, and Paula has been involved in cross-cultural ministry ever since, both overseas and in Australia. For the last 10 years Paula's professional focus has been in teaching English as a Second Language and developing and delivering TESOL training. In 2009 Paula joins us in a part-time role to lead Gateway's ministry to refugees and migrants through CarewerX, our community centre in Woodridge. This position is a dream-job for Paula, who has a passion for helping people from other cultural backgrounds to find relationships through which they experience hope, grace and healing. Paula recharges by tuning into a good story in a movie or novel.

 

Church Family Care  - Barbara O'Brien

Part of the Gateway family for 20 years, Barbara’s role on the team includes oversight of Sunday Welcome Teams. That welcome is continued beyond Sunday as we keep in touch with new people until they find their place of belonging in the church family at Gateway. Barbara also coordinates teams who extend pastoral care within the church family.  Barbara's ministry passion lies in the care area, helping people to a deeper understanding of their unique value, acceptance and belonging in God.  She and Greg have been married for 34 years and have three adult daughters. Barbara loves to escape in the world of drama, dancing, travel and coffee chats with friends.

Discipleship & Evangelism Pastor - Lainey Green

Lainey has been part of the Gateway church family since 2008 when she moved from Sydney to Brisbane. For the past seven years Lainey has worked with Campus Crusade for Christ among university students, equipping them to follow Christ and share their faith wherever God takes them on campus and beyond.

Lainey has recently accepted the role of Discipleship and Evangelism Pastor where she will use her giftings to teach and equip believers for relational evangelism, develop effective discipleship Pathways to help people grow towards Christ-centred lives, and equip and mobilise people in volunteer ministry roles in the church.

 

Lainey is passionate about seeing people come to know our amazing God and grow in their understanding of how He has uniquely designed and gifted them and for them to discover and live out His will for their life in all its fullness. Her other interests include reading, getting out into nature, and spending quality time with friends.
