The Gateway Story

Gateway Baptist Church was previously known as Holland Park Baptist Church, located in Yuletide St in the South Brisbane Suburb. The church originally began in January 1928 with a small Sunday School which grew from 9 children to 60 within only a few weeks. It operated as an outstation of Greenslopes Baptist Church, with steady growth until, in 1946 it was constituted as a church in its own right.

Many building changes and extensions were made over the following years: a new building opened in 1970 as the congregation grew. The church experienced revival around 1984 and attendances went from 120 to 1200 in a relatively short period, outgrowing the existing buildings, and making Gateway one of the largest Baptist churches in Australia at that time. Currently over 1600 people are part of the Gateway church family.

In 1993 Gateway moved from the Holland Park suburban church and a high school hall (where celebrations were held for 8 years), to the Gateway Centre. The Gateway Centre is located at Mackenzie, Brisbane and is situated on 27 acres of natural bushland. Gateway's worship centre is the recycled and reconstructed Queensland pavilion from Brisbane's Expo '88.
